Our friends over at Google are at it again. A pretty big update to how they calculate quality score is being released soon. They are testing it on a few select advertisers to get feedback, then they will roll it out to everyone. (Check out my explanation of quality score if you're not familiar!)
Currently, if your keywords had a poor quality score, their minimum bids to stay active would rise up to 50 cents, $1, $5, or even $10. If you didn't adjust your bids, your keywords would go "inactive for search", which meant Google was preventing them from showing in search results. Now, if your keywords have a poor quality score, they won't go inactive. Instead, you'll see that you have a minimum "first page bid". Because the quality of the ads is low, Google will be showing you the minimum amount you'll need to show on the first page. It's great to see that keywords won't just go inactive, but keep in mind that once you slip off the first page of results, the traffic your ad will see is going to drop dramatically. I haven't had a chance to see it in action yet, but I'm excited by this news and I'm looking forward to it. Has anyone had this enabled in their account yet?
